The honest guide to cosmetic dentistry — what's worth it, what's not, and how to decide
A candid look at what cosmetic treatments can actually achieve, written by clinicians who say "no" as often as they say "yes."
Social media has created a very specific image of what "good teeth" look like — blindingly white, perfectly symmetrical, uniform in size. And if your teeth don't match that image, it's easy to feel like something is wrong with you.
The gap between what you see online and what's real
But here's what cosmetic dentistry professionals know that Instagram doesn't show you: the most beautiful smiles are not perfect. They're harmonious. They suit your face, your colouring, your age, your personality. A smile that looks stunning on one person can look artificial on another — not because the work was bad, but because it was designed for an aesthetic rather than a person.
This is the single most important distinction in cosmetic dentistry, and it's the reason our consultations start with a question most patients don't expect: "What specifically bothers you?"
Starting with what bothers you — not what we can sell you
Cosmetic dentistry covers a wide spectrum, from minor adjustments that take an hour to comprehensive transformations that take months. The right treatment depends entirely on what you want to change and how much change is appropriate.
We find that most patients fall into one of three categories.
"There's one thing that's always bothered me"
A chipped front tooth. A gap you've been self-conscious about since school. A single discoloured tooth that stands out. One old dark filling that shows when you laugh.
These are often the most satisfying cases — because a single, targeted treatment can make a disproportionate difference to how you feel. Composite bonding, a single veneer, or replacing an old filling can be completed in one or two visits and transforms the thing you see every time you look in the mirror.
"I want my teeth to look better overall"
You're not unhappy with one specific tooth — you just feel like your smile is dull, uneven, or aged. Teeth have worn down, yellowed, or shifted over the years. You look at old photos and miss how your teeth used to look.
Professional whitening alone can be transformative here. If shape is also a concern, a combination of whitening and bonding on a few key teeth can reset your smile without any drilling, any anaesthetic, or any permanent alteration to your natural teeth.
"I want a complete transformation"
You've thought about this for a long time. You want a comprehensive change — colour, shape, alignment, everything. This is where porcelain veneers, crowns, or a combination approach comes in.
We take these cases seriously because they involve significant investment and, in some cases, irreversible preparation of natural teeth. Our consultation process for full smile makeovers includes digital smile design — a preview of your result before any treatment begins — so you can see exactly what you're choosing.
The treatments we recommend most often — and why
Composite bonding
The most versatile and conservative cosmetic treatment we offer. Tooth-coloured resin is sculpted directly onto your teeth to repair chips, close gaps, reshape edges, and improve symmetry. No drilling. No anaesthetic. Completed in a single visit. Results last 5–8 years with good care.
We recommend bonding first in the majority of cases because it preserves your natural tooth structure entirely. If you don't like the result, it can be removed. If you love it, it can be maintained or upgraded to veneers later.
Professional whitening
Custom-made trays with professional-grade gel, used at home over 2–3 weeks. Significantly more effective — and safer — than over-the-counter products. You keep the trays forever, so top-ups cost almost nothing.
Whitening is often the highest-impact, lowest-cost cosmetic treatment available. Several shades of improvement can change how your entire face looks in photographs and in person.
Porcelain veneers
Thin, custom-crafted shells bonded to the front of your teeth. The gold standard for comprehensive smile transformations — offering the most dramatic, long-lasting, and natural-looking results. But they're also the most significant commitment, because some natural tooth structure is removed during preparation.
We only recommend veneers when bonding can't achieve the desired result. And we always discuss minimal-preparation or no-preparation options first.
What we won't do
We believe in honest cosmetic dentistry, which means we sometimes say things patients don't expect:
"Your teeth don't need veneers." If bonding or whitening can achieve what you want, we'll recommend the simpler, less invasive, less expensive option — even though veneers generate more revenue for us. Our reputation matters more than any single invoice.
"That look won't suit you." If you bring us a celebrity photo and ask for an identical result, we'll be honest about whether that aesthetic works with your facial structure, lip line, and skin tone. We'd rather design something that looks incredible on you than copy something that looks incredible on someone else.
"Let's start small." For patients unsure about cosmetic work, we almost always suggest starting with the smallest possible change — one or two teeth bonded, or a round of whitening — to see how you feel before committing to anything larger.
The psychology of your smile
Research in facial psychology consistently shows that your smile is the single most influential feature in how others perceive you. It affects judgments of warmth, competence, trustworthiness, and attractiveness — often within the first 100 milliseconds of meeting someone.
But more importantly, it affects how you perceive yourself. Patients who invest in their smile don't just report looking better — they report feeling different. More confident in meetings. More relaxed in photographs. More willing to laugh without covering their mouth.
This isn't vanity. It's the removal of a constraint you've been living with for so long you stopped noticing it was there.
Your next step
If you've been thinking about improving your smile — even casually — a cosmetic consultation is the right starting point. It's 45 minutes, no pressure, and you'll leave with a clear picture of what's possible, what it costs, and whether it's worth doing.
