A parent's guide

A Parent's Guide to Children's Dentistry

Your child's smile is precious — and it starts earlier than you might think. From the first tooth to the first filling, every stage matters.

When do teeth appear?

The first tooth usually arrives around 6 months, with a full set of baby teeth by age 3. They typically appear in this order: bottom front teeth, top front teeth, then back molars.

Every child develops differently — don't worry if your little one's timing varies slightly.

Building healthy habits, stage by stage

  1. 1

    Before teeth appear

Wipe gums with a soft damp cloth once or twice daily to remove bacteria and build early habits.

  2. 2

    First tooth, first brush

Brush twice a day with a soft baby toothbrush and a smear of fluoride toothpaste. Always supervise.

  3. 3

    Toothpaste amounts

Under 3: a smear. Age 3–6: a pea-sized amount. Encourage spitting, and avoid rinsing after brushing.

  4. 4

    First dental visit

Bring your child by age 1, or when the first tooth appears. We keep it relaxed, positive and confidence-building.

Healthy eating = healthy teeth

  • Limit sugary snacks
  • Avoid juice and fizzy drinks where possible
  • Encourage water and milk
  • Offer cheese, fruit and vegetables
  • Keep snacks to mealtimes
  • Avoid bottles in bed with milk or juice

What to look out for

White or brown spots on teeth, pain or sensitivity, or swollen gums — contact your dentist if you're concerned. Early action prevents bigger problems later.

Preparing your child for a visit

Use positive words, keep explanations simple, and stay calm and reassuring. A friendly phrase like "the dentist will clean your tooth and make it strong again" works wonders.

Children copy what they see — brushing together morning and night, with songs or timers, makes daily care feel like fun rather than a chore.

What to expect

None for routine visits. Anything more involved will be explained clearly to you and your child.

Pricing

From £39 consultation. Full pricing on request — every patient receives a personalised treatment plan after a comprehensive consultation.
